Starlink, the satellite internet service, has officially launched in Botswana, making it the sixth Southern African nation to receive the service.
Other countries in the region where Starlink is already available include Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Madagascar, and Eswatini. Zimbabwe is expected to gain access soon, while the timeline for other countries remains uncertain, although Starlink is clearly committed to expanding its presence across the continent.
The cost of a Starlink kit in Botswana is P4,820, equivalent to approximately USD 360, which aligns with the prices in other African countries where Starlink is operational.
The monthly fee for the basic residential plan is P688 (about USD 51), consistent with recent price adjustments in other regions.
Previously, the monthly subscription fee for residential users was under USD 30 across all these countries. However, prices increased by nearly 100% this month.
Botswana is starting with the new, higher rates, which may set a trend for other African countries as they come online. The regional roaming package is priced at P1,380, or about USD 100.
The residential plan is intended for users at their registered location or within a 3 to 5 km radius, in countries where Starlink is officially licensed.
The roaming service, however, is designed for those who want to use Starlink outside their home country or in places where it is not yet licensed, such as Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Namibia.
Previously costing under USD 40 per month, the roaming service price was also increased in August to the current USD 100.
