Benefits of Using Starlink Mini in Zimbabwe

Starlink intends to come to Zimbabwe between October and December 2023

Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite internet service, has officially launched in Zimbabwe, marking a transformative step towards improving internet access in the country. This new service offers a faster and more reliable alternative to traditional broadband, particularly in areas with limited infrastructure.

What is the Starlink Mini?

The Starlink Mini is a compact device designed primarily for travel but can also be used at a fixed location. In Zimbabwe, it is available as a residential option, making it ideal for stationary use. Unlike the Standard Starlink kits (Gen 2 and Gen 3), the Mini is smaller, lighter, and features an integrated router, eliminating the need for external components.

How to Get the Starlink Mini in Zimbabwe

The Starlink Mini can be purchased directly from the Starlink website. It costs $200, with an additional $23 for delivery. The associated Mini Plan costs $30 per month, and currently, the plan is exclusive to the Mini kit. Due to congestion, the Mini might not be available in all areas, but ordering it from a less congested location can be a workaround.

 Starlink Mini Kit Components

The Mini kit includes an antenna/dish with a built-in router, a kickstand for optimal positioning, a pipe adapter for mounting, a power supply to convert standard home voltage to what the Mini requires, a 15m DC power cable, and a Starlink plug to protect the device’s ports.

The Starlink Mini Service Plan

Priced at $30 per month, the Mini Service Plan is tailored for household use, providing speeds between 50-100 Mbps. It offers unlimited data, although deprioritized during congestion, and has no long-term contracts. It is intended for land-based use and cannot be used while on water.

The Mini Plan is more affordable than the Standard plan but offers lower speeds and lower priority in congested areas. Unlike other Starlink plans, it lacks the Pause Service feature and access to premium data options.

 Upgrading and Roaming Options

Starlink Mini users can upgrade to the Mobile Regional service plan, allowing for roaming within Africa, although this option is available only after activation.

 Activation and Availability

The Starlink Mini must be activated in the country of purchase. Currently, the service is available in select countries, including Zimbabwe, Rwanda, and Madagascar.

Why Starlink Mini Matters in Zimbabwe

The Starlink Mini addresses the internet connectivity challenges faced by many Zimbabweans, especially in rural and remote areas. It offers an affordable and reliable alternative to traditional ISPs, helping bridge the digital divide.

Who Is the Starlink Mini For?

The Starlink Mini is ideal for users in rural or less congested residential areas. In urban areas, availability may depend on local congestion levels, but it remains a strong option for those seeking a better internet experience.
