Suspect Arrested in Harare for Posing as City Officer and Demanding Payments

The Harare City Council has issued a warning to residents and ratepayers about a surge in reports of individuals posing as municipal officers to solicit bribes.

This announcement followed the arrest of a suspect, Kevin Dube, who also goes by the alias Kevin Muropa.

According to a statement from the Council, Dube allegedly engaged in fraudulent schemes, targeting business owners and demanding payments while pretending to enforce shop licensing regulations.

“Certain individuals impersonating City of Harare officers are roaming the streets, demanding bribes and taking advantage of residents,” the Council noted.

“After receiving numerous complaints, our municipal police investigation team set up a sting operation that led to the arrest of Kevin Dube, known as Kevin Muropa, who had been conducting fake shop license enforcement under this alias.”

The suspect has now been handed over to the police for further action.

The municipality is urging anyone who may have been a victim of Dube’s schemes to report their cases at Harare Central Police Station, referencing case number IR110664.

“Residents who have encountered this individual are encouraged to file a report at ZRP Harare Central Police Room 151.

“We also urge residents to report any suspicious activity by individuals claiming to be City of Harare officers and to document any attempts to solicit bribes,” the Council added.
