The Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) has appointed former Sables international Takunda Chifokoyo as its new General Manager, with the appointment taking effect in December 2025.
The announcement was made by the ZRU Interim Management Committee (IMC), which was appointed by the Sport and Recreation Commission (SRC) as part of ongoing efforts to stabilise and reform the administration of the sport.
Chifokoyo brings a blend of playing, administrative and corporate experience to the role. He is a former Zimbabwe Sables player who earned nine international caps, making his senior debut at the 2012 Rugby Africa Cup. His international career concluded in 2013 during the Rugby World Cup repechage match against Russia.
Off the field, Chifokoyo has played a key role in Zimbabwe’s recent rugby success. Since 2023, he has served as Team Manager of the Zimbabwe Sables, overseeing the coordination of national team operations. During this period, the Sables enjoyed a historic run, winning the Rugby Africa Cup in both 2024 and 2025, achievements that secured Zimbabwe’s qualification for the Rugby World Cup.
He is a World Rugby Certified Manager and has been involved in the administration of several national teams, working closely with technical, medical and operational support units. His background also includes experience in the financial services sector, equipping him with skills in structured reporting, governance procedures and operational controls.
According to the IMC, Chifokoyo’s appointment forms part of a broader reform agenda outlined in October 2025, aimed at strengthening the Union’s governance and administrative systems. The reform programme focuses on improving financial management, compliance and reporting, procurement processes and overall institutional capacity within the ZRU.
The IMC said further updates will be communicated as the reform process continues, signalling continued changes within Zimbabwe Rugby’s leadership and administration.
Chifokoyo’s appointment is expected to provide continuity and stability as the Union works to align its governance structures with international standards while building on the recent on-field success of the national team.
