A 24-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the theft of US$20,000 from a cash-in-transit vehicle operated by a private security company. The incident occurred on October 16, 2024, while the vehicle was transporting cash between Beitbridge and Mutare.
Kelvin Chisandako was apprehended on November 3, 2024, in Masvingo after police received a tip-off about his possession of large sums of cash. Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed the arrest, stating that the suspect was taken into custody at Mangwawo Village, Mawarire, in Mwenezi.
Upon questioning, Chisandako confessed to stealing the money from the cash-in-transit vehicle at Lutumba Business Centre in Beitbridge. Following his arrest, police recovered US$600 and ZAR 2,320 in cash, along with an empty cash box and a Toyota Aqua car (registration number AGO 5702) which the suspect had purchased for US$9,800.
Investigations revealed that Chisandako had spent part of the stolen funds on various items, including roofing sheets, cement, window frames, doors, bricks, a mobile phone, and several men’s suits.
Commissioner Nyathi praised the public for their assistance in helping authorities locate the suspect and urged continued cooperation with the police. He emphasized that the ZRP would take action against criminals without bias, ensuring justice is served.
