Police have arrested three suspects in connection with a series of cyber fraud cases targeting victims across the country.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed on Sunday the arrests of Tranos Taurai Muzanenhamo (27), Rumbidzai Tsongora (24), and Bradwell Shangwa (25) in Shurugwi.
He said the trio is linked to more than 29 cases of cyber-related fraud involving US$17,009 and ZiG30,665,912, with the offences having been committed in Harare, Bulawayo, and several other towns. Said Commissioner Nyathi:
“Preliminary investigations reveal that the suspects allegedly obtained victims’ personal information through phishing schemes, data breaches and by accessing public records.
“Using these details, the suspects then impersonated victims to request SIM card replacements, thereby gaining control over victims’ mobile money platforms, bank accounts and WhatsApp profiles.
“This enabled the suspects to fraudulently transfer funds from victims’ accounts and ask for money from their contacts.”
He said the police tracked the suspects to Shurugwi and caught them hiding at a local lodge on 31 October 2025.
When officers searched their getaway vehicle, a Toyota Mark X, they found a pair of handcuffs, fake IDs, multiple SIM cards and bank cards, several cellphones, and even a Starlink device.
