In relation to the jail break of convicted murderer and rapist Thabo Bester, three further suspects have been detained. All of the suspects, who are G4S personnel and range in age from 37 to 47, were taken into custody Friday night. With this arrest, there are now twelve suspects in custody overall.
THE STATE SAW THE ARRESTS COME IN
Prosecutor Sello Matlhoko informed the Bloemfontein Magistrates’ Court last week at the court appearance of Thabo Bester, Dr. Nandipha Magudumana, and their co-accused that three other suspects were anticipated to be detained.
He stated that two witnesses still needed to provide statements, and police were still reviewing bank and telephone records.
In May of last year, Bester, his sweetheart Magudumana, her father, and G4S personnel managed to escape from Mangaung Prison.
They allegedly used the body of Katlego Bereng as a decoy in Bester’s escape from prison.
ARRESTS OF LATEST SUSPECTS
One suspect was detained at his residence in Botshabelo, while the other two were detained at their residences in Bloemfontein, according to police spokeswoman Brigadier Athlenda Mathe. “Monday night saw the arrest of all three.
They are all accused of helping a prisoner flee from legitimate custody, violating a body, and engaging in corruption,’ Mathe added. The potential of carrying out more arrests, she continued, cannot be ruled out.
On Wednesday, June 28, 2023, the group is anticipated to appear before the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court.
The trial of Bester, Magudumana, and their seven co-defendants has been continued until August 8 to allow for more police investigation.
