Harare, Zimbabwe | Three vehicles were set on fire outside the offices of controversial businessmen Wicknell Chivayo and Kudakwashe Tagwirei, as well as a DA petrol station in Harare last night.
The incidents occurred just hours after war veteran Blessed Geza publicly labeled Chivayo and Tagwirei as “criminals around the president.”
Eyewitnesses reported that unidentified individuals torched the vehicles in separate but seemingly coordinated attacks. Authorities are yet to confirm whether the attacks were politically motivated or linked to recent tensions within Zimbabwe’s ruling party and its business allies.
Chivayo and Tagwirei, both known for their close ties to President Emmerson Mnangagwa and lucrative government contracts, have faced mounting criticism from political opponents and civil society groups. Earlier in the day, Geza, a former Zanu PF central committee member, accused them of corruption and undue influence over state affairs.
Geza’s remarks came amid his calls for nationwide protests against Mnangagwa’s administration, fueling speculation that the arson attacks could be linked to the ongoing factional battles within Zanu PF.
Police have launched an investigation into the incidents, but no arrests have been made so far. Security officials are on high alert amid growing fears of political violence ahead of planned demonstrations on March 31.
Meanwhile, neither Chivayo nor Tagwirei have publicly commented on the attacks. However, their allies within the ruling party have dismissed the arson as an act of “political desperation” by government critics.
With tensions escalating and political rivalries deepening, Zimbabweans now wait to see whether these latest developments signal a wider power struggle within the ruling elite.
