In a recent ruling at Chinhoyi’s High Court, Trevor Kapungu a convicted murderer has been ordered to serve 720 hours of community service for the killing of his brother last December.
Trevor Kapungu, aged 27 and a resident of Chitambo in Chinhoyi, was found guilty of fatally stabbing his brother, Tonderai, aged 35, during a heated dispute over a T-shirt.
As part of his sentence, Trevor will undertake unpaid work, commonly known as community service, at the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) offices in Chinhoyi, with a stipulated timeframe for completion.
High Court Judge Philda Muzofa, presiding alongside assessors, took into account Trevor’s plea of unintentional and non-premeditated murder during sentencing.
Additionally, the court considered the testimony of the victim’s mother, who expressed her anguish over losing one son and facing the prolonged imprisonment of another.
According to court records, the fatal altercation occurred at the family residence in Chitambo suburb after Trevor accused his brother of wearing his T-shirt without permission and staining it.
In the ensuing altercation, Trevor stabbed his elder brother with a kitchen knife, resulting in severe bleeding from a wound inflicted on the back, just below the left armpit.
After the assault, Trevor locked his injured brother inside the house. However, the victim managed to escape through a window and sought assistance from neighbors.
Despite being rushed to Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital, Tonderai succumbed to his injuries two hours later due to excessive bleeding.
