Two Students Perish in Tragic Accident on Way to Collect O-Level Results
The student pictured had excelled in his O-Level exams, achieving 6 As, 3 Bs, and a C.

Two students, including one who had achieved six As in his O-Level exams, tragically died on Wednesday afternoon when the kombi they were traveling in overturned on the way to collect their results. The students, identified as Denzel and Wayne, were part of a group heading to Mt St Mary’s High School in Hwedza.

Both were from Harare, with Denzel’s funeral wake taking place in Mabvuku, while Wayne’s is being held in Southlea Park.

The students were taken to Mt St Mary’s Hospital following the accident. Early reports had suggested multiple fatalities, but it was later confirmed that only Denzel and Wayne had died, while others sustained serious injuries. Several parents are now praying for the recovery of the injured.

A source close to the family shared their grief, saying, “We are attending Denzel’s funeral in Mabvuku. His body is expected home before being taken to Zvimba for burial on Saturday. It’s heartbreaking to lose such a young man.” Denzel had passed his exams, achieving 6 As, 3 Bs, and a C, though the details of Wayne’s results remain unconfirmed.

One parent expressed concern over the situation, saying, “It’s difficult to talk about the children’s results because people often react in negative ways, especially when it comes to the success of our children.”

Mt St Mary’s High School officials confirmed the accident and expressed deep sorrow for the families affected. “This is a tragic time for both parents and students. We request everyone to keep us in their prayers. Initially, there were reports of several fatalities, but only two have been confirmed dead. The others are in critical condition, and one is in a coma.”

A heartfelt tribute from Wayne’s schoolmates read, “Rest in peace to the greatest mafia in the world. Your presence and all the memories you left made us who we are.”

The school’s development committee chairman, Mr. A Nyasha, provided further details, confirming that the accident took place at Chizema Shops, about 15 km from their destination. “Our thoughts are with the families and friends of the students who didn’t make it. This is a difficult time for our school community. We appreciate the efforts of the hospital staff who did their best to save our children and fellow parent who was also on board.”

It has been reported that the kombi was speeding at the time of the accident.
