A male adult and a member of the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) were recently detained on suspicion of being involved in an unsettling sodomy event. The incident revealed a convoluted chain of events that had shook the community, and it happened against the backdrop of a prior theft case.
The story started on January 19, 2024, at around 10:00 PM at a pub in Mabvuku, Harare. Mellusi Ngwenya was hired by the complainant, Bamala Ngobizitha Williams, a 36-year-old ZRP employee stationed at Support Unit Camps and Hostels. Ngwenya, a 21-year-old, was allegedly a thigh vendor at Manresa’s Munhenga Bar.

At Williams’ house, the two decided to spend the night together. Williams, however, found out the next morning that his wallet, which had originally held US$500, had been stolen, with a significant amount of US$200 taken from it.
Following Williams’ complaint of the theft to ZRP Highlands, preliminary inquiries were conducted. Ngwenya could not be found, hence the case was dismissed as undiscovered after prolonged investigation. But on May 7, 2024, things took a dramatic turn when Williams positively identified Ngwenya at the Munhenga Bar, leading to ZRP Mabvuku’s arrest of Ngwenya.
After then, Ngwenya was brought to the ZRP Highlands Police Station, where he was held for theft while the case was being handled by a judge. But as the investigations went on, more information came to light. Ngwenya presented as a lady, but it was found that she was actually a man from Madikane village in Lower Gweru, under the leadership of Chief Sogwala. As a result, recommendations were made to create a criminal docket for sodomy involving both Ngwenya and Williams, and Ngwenya was given bail on the theft charges.
This led to the transportation of both parties to ZRP Highlands, where a thorough docket for sodomy was created. Ngwenya was referred to ZRP Rhodesville for incarceration pending a court hearing on May 9, 2024, while Williams was held at ZRP Highlands.
