Varakashi Leader 'Charles Munganasa' Appointed Acting ZBC CEO

The Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) stirred controversy on Tuesday with the appointment of a Zanu PF youth leader from Masvingo as acting CEO in what appears to be a hastily arranged reorganization allegedly orchestrated by the Ministry of Information.

Charles Munganasa, a ZBC board member and the Zanu PF secretary for administration in the Masvingo Zanu PF youth league, has been tasked with the dual roles until a permanent CEO is appointed. This move sees him replacing Assael Machakata, who had been serving as acting CEO since February following the suspension of Adelaide Chikunguru.

Simultaneously, Jackie Gwemende, who was recently appointed as acting head of news and current affairs, has been abruptly removed from the position and replaced by Merit Munzwembiri, who will also act in the capacity.

The changes were implemented without providing any reasons, leaving many questioning the motives behind the shake-up.

The decision to install a Zanu PF official at the helm of the public broadcaster, which has long been criticized for its perceived bias towards the ruling party, is expected to ignite fresh controversy. This comes at a particularly sensitive time, as the government has announced plans to raise US$100 million annually for the ZBC by mandating all motorists to pay a US$92 license fee for car radios.

Observers argue that these latest developments at the ZBC underscore the tight grip maintained by the Ministry of Information over the state broadcaster. The Ministry’s influence over key appointments within the ZBC raises concerns about the broadcaster’s independence and its ability to fulfill its mandate of providing impartial and objective news coverage to the Zimbabwean public.

Critics fear that the politicization of the ZBC’s leadership could further erode public trust in the broadcaster and undermine its credibility. Moreover, it threatens to perpetuate the perception that the ZBC serves as a mouthpiece for the ruling party rather than as a neutral platform for the dissemination of information.

As calls for media reform in Zimbabwe grow louder, the latest developments at the ZBC highlight the urgent need for genuine efforts to safeguard the independence and integrity of the country’s public broadcaster. Only by ensuring transparent and merit-based appointments can the ZBC regain the trust of the Zimbabwean people and fulfill its vital role in fostering a democratic and informed society.
