Harare | In a press briefing held on January 18, 2024, Westprop CEO, Mr. Ken Sharpe, outlined the company’s plans for the revitalization of a neglected wetland situated between the Pokugara and Millennium Heights lifestyle developments at Millennium Park in Borrowdale West.
Despite recent setbacks due to the sale of the land, Westprop remains committed to converting the area into a thriving nature park, emphasizing environmental sustainability and the coexistence of nature with built-up spaces.
The $1 million project aims to re-engineer the wetland, reintroduce biodiversity and aquatic life, and create an eco-friendly tourism facility with amenities such as walkways, bicycle tracks, bird viewing sites, fishing, and canoeing facilities.
The development aligns with Westprop’s broader theme of ‘live, work, shop, and play,’ offering residents recreational opportunities within the gated community and contributing to the larger Zimbabwean community.
The press briefing highlighted the significance of wetland parks in improving urban thermal environments, with Westprop citing research from Science Direct.
The proposed park, set to become a symbol of ecological city development, is expected to provide ecological, economic, and social benefits, including managing stormwater, reducing flooding, and enhancing water quality.
Notably, Westprop received its Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) certificate in December 2015 and emphasized their commitment to the coordinated and sustainable development of the wetland.
The company acknowledges the role of wetland parks in promoting sustainable urban development and enhancing the quality of life for those residing in built-up areas.
