Businessman and socialite Wicknell Chivayo has dismissed claims that he paid an exorbitant US$300,000 as lobola for his wife.
Speaking to H-Metro, Chivayo clarified that his in-laws only requested US$20,000 as lobola, a sum significantly lower than what was being reported in various media outlets.
While acknowledging that he spent a considerable amount on the grand ceremony, Chivayo stressed that most of the expenditure was directed towards entertainment, lavish decorations, drinks, and other logistical aspects of the event. He revealed that several bands were hired to provide entertainment, and meticulous attention was given to creating an opulent ambiance for the occasion.
Chivayo took the opportunity to praise his in-laws, describing them as “humble and understanding” individuals who ensured that the traditional proceedings remained within reasonable financial expectations. According to him, the lobola payment constituted only a small fraction of the overall expenses, with the bulk of the costs going towards making the event a memorable celebration.
The revelation comes in response to widespread speculation regarding the amount he spent, with many assuming the extravagant nature of the event meant an equally staggering lobola fee. Chivayo’s clarification serves to dispel these rumors, affirming that the traditional marriage negotiations were conducted within customary norms and expectations.
The businessman’s nuptials had already drawn public attention due to the lavish display of wealth, sparking discussions about cultural practices, lobola expectations, and the financial commitments tied to marriage in modern Zimbabwe. However, Chivayo’s statement reaffirms that, despite his well-known financial capabilities, his in-laws maintained a modest approach to the tradition.
With this clarification, Chivayo aims to put an end to speculation and underscore the importance of appreciating the traditional aspects of marriage without unnecessary exaggeration of costs.
