A man is in critical condition after his second wife, Chiedza Totai, poured hot cooking oil on him, allegedly due to feeling neglected.
Totai, 43, appeared before Shurugwi magistrate Sithabile Zungula on domestic violence charges and has been remanded in custody until May 21, pending her husband Shepherd Gwenzi’s medical examination.
Totai claimed that Gwenzi spent most of his time with his first wife, ignoring her needs. She denied the charges, asserting that she accidentally poured the hot oil on Gwenzi after boiling it while he was asleep.
Gwenzi sustained burns on his face and upper body and is currently receiving treatment at Shurugwi District Hospital.

Prosecutor Kwanele Njini recounted the incident, stating that on May 4, at around 6 am in Village 2 Rentfontein, Shurugwi, Totai and Gwenzi had an argument about conjugal rights. Totai then went to the kitchen, boiled cooking oil, and returned to pour it over Gwenzi’s face while he was sleeping.
The incident was reported to the Shurugwi Police Station, leading to Totai’s arrest. In court, Totai claimed she intended to use the oil to make fat cakes but could not explain why the pot ended up in the bedroom.
