ZANU PF aspiring Member of Parliament for Mt Pleasant constituency Beadle Gwasira was caught yesterday trying to manipulate the Presidential Borehole Drilling Scheme for personal gain.
The program aims to drill a borehole in each of the country’s 35,000 villages by 2025, and is currently prioritizing communities that have long struggled to access clean water.
However, Gwasira – who had been tasked with identifying an area within his constituency that is in desperate need of a borehole – chose an uninhabited area, a mere forest close to Newlands roundabout.
According to this publication’s investigations, Gwasira picked the spot because of his interest in the land. A source who spoke to this publication revealed that Gwasira owns some stands on that land and was hoping to improve the area’s market value with the borehole.
“He has some stands around that area, that’s why he gave it priority over numerous areas within his constituency that are struggling with water issues,” the source said.
“You have to wonder how much such an acquisitive and corrupt person would amass for himself if he were elected to represent the people.”
The source further revealed that resources were fortunately saved after one of the borehole program implementers who had been inspecting progress around Harare visited the site and immediately stopped operations before instructing the working personnel to a different site with people in real need of water.
When called for comment, Gwasira could neither deny nor confirm his interest in the land.
“Who told you this?” he asked. “I have no comment. Write whatever you want to write.”
