ZANU PF has responded to criticism from some opposition voices in the SADC region, accusing the party of interfering in the electoral processes of several countries to support ruling parties that are also former liberation movements. According to ZANU PF, its position has been misrepresented, particularly by opposition groups in Mozambique, South Africa, Botswana, and Namibia.
In an interview with Business Times, Farai Marapira, ZANU PF’s Director of Information and Publicity, rejected accusations of manipulation, asserting that the party’s strength comes from its commitment to authentic African values. He stated:
“As ZANU PF, we are strong, not because of manipulation, but because we stand for powerful ideals that resonate across borders. Our message is one that supports the true values of Africa, and it is something that imperialist ideologies cannot accept.”
Marapira went on to criticize foreign forces, claiming that colonial powers, along with their local allies in the SADC region, have exhausted their efforts to undermine the sovereignty of nations that have historically resisted foreign influence. He added:
“When a party like ZANU PF stands up to such powerful forces, it is natural for them to be disturbed. They are running out of ideas, and people like Ian Khama and Mmusi Maimane are at a loss. What they fail to realize is that this isn’t just about ZANU PF—it is about African nations rediscovering their true identity outside the colonial framework.”
Marapira expressed concern over the growing solidarity among African nations, particularly in the SADC region, as they reclaim their heritage and assert their independence. He believes this shift is troubling for those who seek to maintain control over the continent’s political landscape.
