ZBC CEO Resigns

ZBC CEO Resigns

Adelaide Chikunguru, the Chief Executive Officer of the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC), has tendered her resignation, marking a significant change in the leadership of the national broadcaster. Alongside Chikunguru, Robson Mhandu, the Director of Radio Services, has also departed after his contract was not renewed upon its expiry on Thursday.

The announcement of Chikunguru’s resignation and Mhandu’s departure was made by the national broadcaster in a statement released yesterday.

The departure of these key figures from ZBC signals a period of transition for the organization. Currently, Assael Machakata, the Finance Director of ZBC, will serve as the Acting CEO until a substantive CEO is appointed.

The reasons behind Chikunguru’s resignation and Mhandu’s departure were not immediately disclosed by ZBC. However, their exits will undoubtedly have implications for the future direction and operations of the national broadcaster.

Chikunguru’s tenure as CEO has seen both challenges and accomplishments for ZBC, including efforts to modernize and adapt to the evolving media landscape. Meanwhile, Mhandu’s role in overseeing radio services has been integral to ZBC’s broadcasting offerings.

As ZBC moves forward with new leadership, the focus will be on maintaining stability and continuing to fulfill its mandate as the primary broadcaster in Zimbabwe. The appointment of a new CEO will be closely watched by stakeholders and observers interested in the future trajectory of ZBC and its role in the country’s media landscape.

“The Chief Executive Officer of the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation, Ms Adelaide Chikunguru, has resigned.

“Ms Chikunguru had been suspended pending disciplinary proceedings which had been instituted. She has decided to resign before the commencement of the proceedings.

“This is her right. A resignation is a unilateral act repudiating the employment contract and requires neither the employer’s consent nor concurrence therein.

“The resignation has taken effect by operation of law today, the 1st March 2024, when the Corporation was formally served with the same,” read the statement.

The broadcaster stated that Mr. Mhandu, who was serving on a fixed-term contract, saw his contract expire on February 29 without renewal.
