A tragic incident occurred at Zhombe Mission Dam in Kwekwe District, Midlands Province, last Thursday, when two young schoolchildren drowned while swimming after school.
Chief Gwesela of Zhombe confirmed that Ropafadzo Jim, a Grade 1 pupil, and Ebenezer Khumalo, a Grade 2 pupil, both from St. Martins Deporis Primary School, lost their lives in the unfortunate event. Chief Gwesela explained:
“The children were three in total, heading home from St. Martins Deporis Primary School when they decided to swim in the dam. One child got stuck in the mud and began to drown. The second child attempted to rescue their friend, while the third ran to nearby shops to seek help. When they returned, both children had already drowned.
Only their schoolbags and belongings were visible by the dam, and after a search by villagers, the bodies of the two children were recovered, but sadly they were already deceased.”
The two children, who lived in the same neighborhood, have since been laid to rest.
