Zimbabwe Deports Chishimba Kambwili, Zambia Opposition Politician

According to Lusaka Times, Chishimba Kambwili, a member of the Patriotic Front (PF), the previous ruling party of Zambia, was deported from Zimbabwe and brought back to his home country after being detained for a minimum of nine days.

On January 30, 2024, Kambwili apparently escaped to Zimbabwe in order to receive medical attention with the assistance of a Zimbabwean national. But when he arrived, he was taken into custody by Zimbabwean officials.

At the Chirundu border crossing on Thursday, February 8, 2024, at 23:00 hours, Kambwili was turned up to Zambian officials, according to confirmation from Zambia’s Minister of Home Affairs, Jack Mwiimbu.

At the moment, Kambwili is being evaluated for his health at Lusaka’s Maina Soko Hospital.

Minister Mwiimbu made it clear to the media in Mushindamo District that Kambwili had entered Zimbabwe unlawfully and had willingly turned over his passport to immigration officials at the Chirundu border when they requested that he appear in person.

He stressed that Kambwili’s passport was not seized by the Zambian government, nor was his ability to travel for medical reasons restricted.

Minister Mwiimbu went on to say that Kambwili, who was regarded as an illegal immigrant in Zimbabwe because of his unauthorised admission, was located with the assistance of the governments of Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Minister Mwiimbu applauded the Zimbabwean authorities’ decision to deport him as a result.

Minister Mwiimbu addressed allegations of abuse on social media and emphasised President Hakainde Hichilema’s order to give Kambwili access to healthcare despite his political membership and criminal history.

He underlined that Kambwili’s evacuation for medical care was evidence of the government’s commitment to ensuring the wellbeing of all residents.

Hakainde Hichilema has been accused of utilising the military, police, and legal system to attack members of the former ruling party, especially former president Edgar Lungu and his family, since taking office in Zambia.

Given that Hichilema intends to seek reelection in 2026, some observers surmise that his goal is to weaken the previous ruling party until that time.
