The Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC) has urged media organizations and journalists to refrain from spreading false, harmful, or provocative content, stressing the importance of adhering to standards of journalistic integrity, precision, and accountability.
In a statement released on November 28, 2024, the ZMC, one of Zimbabwe’s five Chapter 12 Independent Commissions, voiced its concerns about the ongoing publication of content deemed defamatory and disrespectful, which it believes undermines national leadership.
This follows a demand from the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) for a daily newspaper to retract a story alleging that President Emmerson Mnangagwa had sought outside ZANU PF structures to extend his presidency beyond 2028, in violation of the Constitution.
The OPC labeled the article as slanderous and harmful to national unity, accusing it of tarnishing the President’s reputation. The newspaper has been given a seven-day deadline to retract the story or face potential legal action.
In its statement, the ZMC emphasized the urgency of curbing unethical reporting, warning that blatant violations of journalistic principles will be met with stringent action. The Commission acknowledged that media freedom is a cornerstone of democracy but insisted that such freedom carries the responsibility of reporting with integrity.
The ZMC stressed that the media’s role goes beyond just reporting the news—it must be done responsibly and accurately. Irresponsible journalism that prioritizes sensationalism or attacks individuals instead of fostering constructive dialogue is harmful and has no place in Zimbabwe’s media landscape.
The Commission remains committed to upholding media standards and ensuring that the media plays a constructive role in promoting national development and democracy. The ZMC also reiterated its commitment to engaging with media houses and journalists to maintain ethical journalism and to strengthen Zimbabwe’s democracy.
