Zimbabwean Builder Dupes Woman R25 000 in SA

A woman residing in Pelikan Park, Cape Town, has come forward to share her ordeal involving an alleged scammer who vanished with R25,000 she paid for a Nutec house construction, only to find him cleaning her mother’s yard instead.

According to a report by the Daily Voice, the 38-year-old woman, who opted to stay anonymous, recounted her experience as a cautionary tale to alert others about potential scams.

Narrating the incident, she revealed that a man named Carlos Mapurati from KB Project contacted her after she showed interest in Nutec houses on Facebook Marketplace. They finalized a design, and she transferred R23,000 to his bank account, along with an extra R2,000 to kickstart the project.

Expressing her frustration, the woman said, “His guys were working and cleaning the yard. I had just finished my night shift, so I fell asleep. When I woke up and asked my mom about them, they told her they were removing rubble, and that’s the last time I saw them.”

Despite initially appearing trustworthy, the woman later learned that Carlos’ true identity was Knowledge Bhokwani from Zimbabwe, after he blocked her on social media.

Determined to seek justice, she reported the incident to the police and collaborated with them to catch the culprit.

Using a fake Facebook profile to lure the scammer, she exposed him successfully, leading to his arrest.

Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie confirmed the arrest of a 31-year-old Zimbabwean citizen on theft charges in November 2023, shedding light on the legal actions taken against the alleged scammer.
