Zimbabwean Man Wins £167,728.20 in UK Lottery

Mungwaru Nyakupinda, a UK resident, has become the latest lottery winner, securing a life-changing sum of E167,728.20. Mungwaru’s incredible story is marked by serendipity and a touch of humor, making his windfall even more remarkable.

The winning ticket was purchased on a whim during a routine shopping trip to Sainsbury’s on Tuesday, July 9th. Reflecting on the fortuitous moment, Mungwaru shared, “First and foremost I would like to thank Karma.” He recounted the events of that fateful day, explaining, “I went into Sainsbury’s to buy some stuff. There was £3 change, and I asked for a lottery ticket.”

Despite being a regular online lottery player, Mungwaru forgot about the physical ticket. It wasn’t until a later visit to the same store that he remembered to check it, leading to an unexpected discovery.

Upon asking the shop assistant to check the ticket, he heard the unmistakable sound of a winning ticket. However, the slip advised, “Return ticket to owner and owner needs to call the national lottery.”

Choosing to wait until he was at home and relaxed, Mungwaru confirmed the win. To his delight, the ticket was indeed a winner, making him £167,728.20 richer.

In a humorous twist, Mungwaru addressed a personal rivalry as he shared his news. Speaking in Shona, he said, “Kana Paine anoziva Kerina Mujati akambondituka kuti Mungwaru haana mota,” which translates to, “If anyone knows Kerina Mujati, she once mocked me saying I didn’t have a car.” With a chuckle, he continued, “Well, I have more money than Skomota. Will be laughing all the way to the bank.”
