Dar es Salaam, Tanzania | Lieutenant General Anselem Nhamo Sanyatwe, the former ambassador of Zimbabwe to Tanzania from 2019 to 2023 and current Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) commander, is set to attend a commemorative dialogue in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, this Friday.
The event will pay tribute to Tanzania’s founding leader, Julius Mwalimu Nyerere, who is remembered for his leadership in promoting Pan-Africanism, peace, unity, and self-reliance.
General Sanyatwe will be joined by a panel of notable figures, including former South African President Thabo Mbeki, former Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete, and Suo Peng, a representative from the Communist Party of China. The theme of the event is “Mwalimu Nyerere and the Liberation Movement: Reflections on Solidarity, Leadership, Pan-Africanism, and African Unity.”
As a liberation war veteran, General Sanyatwe is expected to reflect on Nyerere’s vision for Africa and its influence on the development of organizations such as the African Union (AU) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC). He will highlight the relevance of Nyerere’s legacy in the current African context.
Nyerere, who led Tanzania from 1964 to 1985, played a pivotal role in the country’s independence and implemented policies focusing on African socialism, self-reliance, and equality.
Among his contributions were the expansion of healthcare services, the introduction of free universal primary education, and the Arusha Declaration, which emphasized cooperative agriculture and the creation of a socialist society.
