A recent video has sparked allegations of corruption involving police officers from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Makoni Cycle Unit in Chitungwiza, who are accused of accepting bribes from suspected drug dealers rather than taking action against them.
The video, which has gone viral on social media, appears to show officers accepting money from individuals linked to the illegal drug trade. The incident reportedly took place in the Mautopa unit, near the Unit L bus stop, where the officers are alleged to have engaged in bribery with individuals involved in distributing drugs such as marijuana (mbanje), bronco (a commonly abused cough syrup), and mutoriro (a harmful street drug).
These illicit substances have become increasingly prevalent in Chitungwiza and other areas, particularly among young people, who are often targeted by drug dealers. This rise in drug abuse is contributing to serious social problems, including addiction, crime, and violence, particularly in urban communities.
Despite the growing concerns over drug trafficking, Zimbabwe’s law enforcement agencies have been under scrutiny for failing to adequately address these issues. Corruption within the police force has long been a topic of public concern.
