A Gold Class bus traveling from Harare to Rusape, carrying 53 students and seven staff members from Chipinge Junior Primary School, was involved in a serious accident on Friday afternoon along the Harare-Mutare Road.
According to a statement from Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the driver lost control of the bus while trying to overtake a haulage truck at the 165 km mark. The vehicle veered off the road to the right, overturned, and came to rest on its left side.
Tragically, one adult female was pronounced dead at the scene, while 25 students and six adults sustained injuries and were taken to Rusape General Hospital for medical attention. Commissioner Nyathi stated:
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police reports a fatal road traffic accident that occurred on November 1, 2024, around 1:45 PM, involving a Gold Class bus carrying students and staff from Chipinge Junior Primary School.”
He emphasized the circumstances leading to the accident: “As the bus approached the 165 km peg along the Harare-Mutare Road, the driver attempted to overtake a haulage truck. Due to excessive speed, he lost control of the vehicle.”
Commissioner Nyathi also urged drivers to prioritize safety, advising them to avoid speeding and overtaking in unsafe conditions.
