Ministry Fires Milton High Teacher For Sodomising Learners Despite Court Acquittal

A teacher at Milton High School, Tyson Lunga, aged 37, has been sacked by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education.

The dismissal comes after allegations of inappropriate conduct with students, even though he was found not guilty in court due to insufficient evidence.

Lunga had been suspended since May 2025. He faced a disciplinary committee on 22 September 2025, where he was charged with improper association with learners, as per the ministry’s regulations.

The allegations against Lunga, who is also a pastor at a local Pentecostal church and a volunteer with Scripture Union, included claims that he had sodomised mainly Form Two students and indecently assaulted several others.

It was also alleged that he offered students cash, food like burgers, and other items to keep them quiet.

He was arrested in June 2025 after students, with help from another staff member, reported the incidents to the police, stating they had occurred in May.

However, Bulawayo magistrate Beverly Madzikatire cleared Lunga of six charges of improper conduct with learners.

The magistrate ruled that the accusations lacked substance and were not reported promptly or voluntarily.

She also noted that despite claims that Lunga sent sexually explicit messages, none were presented in court.

Lunga’s lawyer, Constance Mathaba of Makiya and Partners, argued that the allegations were vague, lacked specific dates and locations, and were therefore unreliable.

Mathaba further argued that the accusations were orchestrated by two other teachers following Lunga’s transfer to Milton High in September 2024.

She told the court that Lunga had previously raised concerns about these rumours with the school head, but no action was taken.

Despite the court’s acquittal, the Ministry proceeded with its own internal disciplinary process, which ultimately led to Lunga’s dismissal.

The Bulawayo Provincial Education Director, Bernard Mazambane, confirmed the dismissal to the Chronicle on Tuesday, 20 January 2026. He said:

“The teacher concerned has been relieved of his duties. As a ministry, we do not rely solely on court outcomes. We have our own internal processes guided mainly by what learners say.”
