Nedbank’s Deafening Silence Deepens Customer Trust Crisis as Unanswered Questions Mount

Nedbank Zimbabwe’s continued silence over the unresolved financial consequences of its legal battle with Neville Mutsvangwa is raising serious questions about the bank’s commitment to customer relations, accountability and the protection of its clients’ interests.

Despite growing scrutiny over the dispute, the bank has yet to publicly address the concerns surrounding legal costs and interest allegedly lost during the years Mutsvangwa was without access to his money. Its silence is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore, particularly in a matter that has already placed its handling of a customer dispute under the spotlight.

The principal amount was eventually repaid following a court battle. But that repayment has not extinguished the questions surrounding the financial burden of pursuing the matter through the legal system.

Mutsvangwa’s dispute with Nedbank, recorded under case number MC4553/20, centred on transactions he said he had not authorised. The bank disputed liability and relied on its position that the transactions had been authenticated using a mobile number registered to him and one-time passwords sent to that number. The dispute ultimately resulted in the principal being returned, according to the previous report.

Yet the broader issue remains: does returning a customer’s money settle the matter when the customer may still have incurred legal expenses and lost the use of those funds for years?

Nedbank’s apparent unwillingness to publicly engage with these questions risks reinforcing the perception that, once a dispute becomes inconvenient, the customer is left to carry the burden of finding answers.

For a financial institution whose business depends heavily on public confidence, that is a dangerous message to send.

Customers entrust banks with their money on the understanding that their interests will be treated seriously and that disputes will be handled with transparency, professionalism and fairness. When a controversy raises questions about those obligations, silence does little to restore confidence. Instead, it leaves room for legitimate concerns to grow.

The issue is no longer simply about a disputed transaction. It is also about how a bank responds when its conduct is challenged and its relationship with a customer comes under public scrutiny.

Nedbank Zimbabwe has an opportunity to clarify its position, explain whether the outstanding concerns have been addressed and demonstrate that customer relationships matter beyond the immediate financial transaction.

Until it does so, its silence will continue to speak for itself in the eyes of customers watching the dispute unfold.
