CCC MP Elect, Zivanai Mhetu On the Run!

HARARE – The Zimbabwe Republic Police still looking for Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) member of Parliament elect for Epworth North, Zivai Mhetu on allegations of murdering his wife in February 2018.

Mhetu currently on the run is out on bail. The prosecutor did not oppose bail after the investigating officer indicated that he was yet to obtain a full post-mortem.

However sources within the police told this publication that Mhetu failed to show up after being summoned by the police on several occasions last month.

“Mhetu was summoned by CID homicide department but failed to do so on Thursday and he in mowhere to be found even the address he gave,” said the source.

As part of his bail conditions, Mhetu was ordered to report to the police once a week, not to interfere with witnesses and to continue residing at 3587 Tynwald North, Harare, until the matter is finalized.

Mhetu is also being accused of bribing state prosecutors to delay the proceedings.

The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) is currently investigating the matter, the Commission’s spokesperson Commissioner, Thandiwe told this publication last week.

“Yes the matter has been brought to our attention and the investigations are currently underway and we will publicize once we’re done”, said Mlobane

State, alleged that on February 7 2018, Mhetu, who had been having marital problems with his late wife, reportedly assaulted her on the face and thighs.

The court heard that Mhetu went on to strangle his wife before taking her to a private medical facility in Belvedere, Harare, where she was treated.

It is the State’s case that the now deceased was however, later referred to Parirenyatwa Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

A post-mortem done by Dr Matshalaga was not conclusive, and she sent specimens to a Government analyst for a toxicology examination. The results are still pending.

According to the police, the relatives of Mhetu’s wife indicated that the couple had marital disputes and suspected foul play.

The deceased’s relatives then requested for a second post-mortem, which was conducted.
They alleged that she had bruises on the neck, thighs and face. The police submitted that results of the second post-mortem are not documented.

The matter was initially reported and taken as a case of sudden death, but due to further investigations, the police later decided to prefer murder charges against Mhetu.

Efforts to get come comment from police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi were fruitless as his mobile phone went unanswered.

Mhetu is expected to take oath as the legislator for Epworth North Constituency.
