Daughter Seeks Court Intervention After Mother Allegedly Claims Property and Husband

A contentious family dispute has emerged between a mother and her daughter, following allegations that the mother entered into a relationship with her daughter’s husband. The case has now reached the Harare Civil Court, where Ethel Mupoperi is accused of having an affair with her daughter Munyaradzi’s husband while Munyaradzi was pregnant.

Munyaradzi, who is Ethel’s only child, expressed her deep frustration and anger, stating that she can never forgive her mother for what she considers a profound betrayal. According to Munyaradzi, Ethel began a relationship with her husband while she was expecting, and the two are said to have moved to a rural area together.

“I was pregnant when my mother took my husband. They started a new life in the rural areas, leaving me behind,” Munyaradzi testified. “When they left, I started building on a piece of land that my husband bought. Now my mother is claiming that property as her own.”

Munyaradzi added that, in her view, the situation now leaves her and her mother in a polygamous marriage with shared ownership of everything. She stated, “Since she took my husband, we are now co-wives, and everything is in double ownership.”

In response, Ethel Mupoperi testified in court that she had endured emotional and verbal abuse from her daughter. Ethel claimed that Munyaradzi had been disrespectful towards her and had accused her of stealing her husband, demanding that she leave her home. Ethel also insisted that the property in question was hers and not her daughter’s.

“My daughter wants me to leave my home, claiming that she is the rightful heir,” Ethel explained. “She has insulted me and accused me of taking her husband. I am her only parent, but she does not treat me with respect. I am the rightful owner of the property she is now claiming, and I want the courts to intervene.”

After hearing both sides, Magistrate Meenal Naratom granted Ethel Mupoperi a peace order against her daughter, Munyaradzi, to prevent further conflict between the two.
