Easter Road Traffic Accidents Claim 27 Lives, Police Report Reveals
Over the just-ended Easter holiday, road traffic accidents claimed the lives of at least 27 people, as per reports from the police. This marks a slight decrease from the previous year’s toll of 29 fatalities. However, despite this decline in deaths, there was a concerning increase in fatal road accidents, jumping from 16 incidents last year to 26 this year.
Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi of the police department released a statement detailing the statistics and trends observed during the holiday period. The statement also highlighted a marginal decrease in the overall number of road traffic accidents, dropping from 288 in 2023 to 286 in 2024. Despite this reduction, there was a rise in casualties, with injuries mounting from 145 last year to 159 this year.

Nyathi underscored several primary factors contributing to these road accidents. These include speeding, reckless driving, driver fatigue, and vehicle defects. He urged motorists to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations to prevent further tragedies on the roads.
The police department has reiterated its commitment to enforcing road safety measures and conducting awareness campaigns to educate the public on responsible driving practices. Authorities are also calling for collaborative efforts from drivers, pedestrians, and relevant stakeholders to curb the incidence of road traffic accidents and save lives.
“A comprehensive analysis by the police has revealed that most accidents recorded during the Easter holiday are attributed to speeding, inattention, misjudgment, overtaking error, and failure to observe road rules and regulations by drivers.
“The police did not record major fatal road accidents during this year’s Easter holiday as most fatal road accidents involved private motor vehicles and in some instances, pedestrians were victims.
“In one of the fatal road traffic accidents recorded on 30th March 2024 along Percy Iboston Road near rail crossing, Cowdray Park, Bulawayo a yet to be identified man was killed after being hit by a Honda Fit vehicle,” said Nyathi.
