Geo Pomona Delegation Explores Waste Management Partnership with Lesotho

Maseru, Lesotho | A delegation from Geo Pomona Waste Management held talks with Lesotho’s Prime Minister, Samuel Ntsokoane Matekane, yesterday in Maseru, aiming to forge a partnership to enhance waste management systems in the country.

During the meeting at State House, Prime Minister Matekane expressed strong interest in the solutions proposed by the delegation and requested the preparation of a memorandum of understanding to be finalized by the coming month.

The delegation, led by Engineer Amos Marawa, Zimbabwe’s Deputy Chief Secretary in the Office of the President and Cabinet, described the discussions as highly productive. Eng. Marawa highlighted the Prime Minister’s urgency in addressing Lesotho’s pressing waste management issues.

“We had a very constructive engagement with the honourable Prime Minister of Lesotho, who assured us of his government’s commitment to implement this project,” said Eng. Marawa. “Geo Pomona has been asked to develop a proposal that will fast-track this collaboration.”

Eng. Marawa underscored Zimbabwe’s readiness to assist Lesotho, especially in resolving the challenges posed by Maseru’s current dumpsite, which has become a health hazard for nearby communities.

“Our goal is to offer a sustainable solution for waste management that will benefit Maseru and the entire nation,” he added.

Lesotho’s Minister of Local Government, Chieftainship, Home Affairs, and Police, Lebona Lephema, expressed his appreciation for the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Chairperson, President Emmerson Mnangagwa, for facilitating this collaboration.

“We are eager to visit Zimbabwe to explore ways to develop the proposal further. This partnership holds great promise for mutual growth and cooperation,” Minister Lephema remarked.

Geo Pomona’s Executive Chairman, Dr. Dilesh Nguwaya, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to working closely with Lesotho to address its waste management challenges.

“Our next step is to draft a comprehensive proposal for the Lesotho government. Given the urgency of the situation, my team will begin work immediately,” Dr. Nguwaya stated.

Lesotho has long grappled with waste management issues, operating without a dedicated landfill and relying on the export of hazardous waste over 500 kilometers to South Africa.

This partnership with Geo Pomona aims to provide a sustainable and effective waste management solution for the country.
