The government has organized a state-assisted funeral for six artisanal miners who tragically lost their lives in a landslide at a mine dump in Kwekwe last Thursday.
The incident occurred near the Globe and Phoenix Mine, close to the Kwekwe Central Business District.
According to ZBC News, a funeral procession was held in Kwekwe on Sunday for the deceased: Simon Chauke, Offias Ncube, Edward Phiri, Gasiyani Banda, Marshall Mpofu, and Ephraim Ncube.
Fortune Mpungu, chairperson of the Kwekwe District Civil Protection Unit (CPU), stated, “We received reports of the mine collapse and quickly mobilized resources, including excavators, to recover the bodies.”
He added, “We have activated our CPU and are on-site to assist with all necessary operations.”
Additionally, Globe and Phoenix Primary School has been closed after a classroom block collapsed into an underground tunnel during school hours, injuring students. A nearby house also fell into an underground tunnel shortly thereafter, raising further safety concerns for residents in the mining community.
