Israel’s UN envoy, Gilad Erdan, has called on the council to impose “all possible sanctions on Iran before it’s too late” and to condemn Iran for its acts of terror, according to Agence France-Presse.
Meanwhile, the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, has appealed for restraint, fearing that Iran’s attacks on Israel could lead to further escalation.
“The region and the world cannot afford more war,” Guterres stated during the Security Council meeting held to discuss Saturday’s Iranian attack. He warned that the Middle East is on the verge of a full-scale conflict and called for de-escalation.
In response, Iran’s UN envoy, Amir Saeid Iravani, asserted that the Islamic Republic was exercising its inherent right to self-defense and had no choice but to act. He emphasized that Iran did not seek escalation or war but would respond to any threats or aggression.
Furthermore, Iran’s mission to the United Nations cautioned the US to stay out of the conflict with Israel, stating that the matter could be considered resolved. However, they warned that if Israel made another mistake, Iran’s response would be significantly more severe.
In April, Iran retaliated for an airstrike believed to be carried out by Israel that destroyed Tehran’s consular building in Syria’s capital by launching its first-ever direct attack on Israeli territory.
