NAFJ’s recent workshop in Harare revealed alarming trends in the media’s portrayal of LGBTI individuals.
In a country where homosexuality is criminalized, the LGBTI community often finds it difficult to have their voices heard, leading to a lack of authentic representation in media narratives.
The workshop attracted a diverse group of participants, including media practitioners and students from tertiary institutions, all eager to learn how to better represent marginalized voices in their reporting.
During the workshop, community members shared their experiences of being misrepresented and sensationalized in the media, emphasizing the need for journalists to approach LGBTI issues with sensitivity and care.
Participants expressed their frustration over the media’s tendency to focus on sensational stories rather than the real-life experiences of LGBTI individuals, which can perpetuate harmful stereotypes and discrimination.
