War veterans in the Midlands received US$150,000 on Tuesday during the launch of the Presidential War Veterans Fund in the province.
This marks the latest phase of the national rollout, following similar disbursements in Masvingo, Mashonaland Central, Mashonaland East, and Bulawayo.
The fund, totaling US$1.5 million nationwide, is part of the government’s efforts to support veterans who played a pivotal role in Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle.
Speaking at the launch, Presidential Investment Advisor Paul Tungwarara emphasized the importance of honoring their sacrifices.
“We are here not merely to launch initiatives but to honor the bedrock of our nation’s freedom—our war veterans. Their courage is etched into our soil, their resilience woven into our flag. True gratitude is reflected in action, not just words,” he said.
The event drew emotional responses from veterans, many of whom expressed gratitude for the long-awaited recognition.
“This fund shows that our sacrifices were not in vain,” said Comrade Tichaona Moyo, a war veteran. “We fought for Zimbabwe’s freedom, and today, we feel acknowledged. This support will make a real difference in our lives.”
Midlands Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Owen Ncube used the occasion to condemn what he described as “malicious falsehoods” spread by critics of the government.
“We condemn, without fear or favor, the doomed machinations of sponsored sellouts who masquerade as public opinion leaders. This fund demonstrates our commitment to a people-centric, revolutionary leadership,” he said.
The Presidential War Veterans Fund is a key component of Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030, which aims to transform the country into an upper-middle-income economy.
By providing financial support to veterans, the government seeks to address their economic challenges while honoring their contributions to the nation’s independence.
For many veterans, the fund represents more than just financial assistance—it is a symbol of national gratitude.
“We fought for freedom, but today, we are fighting for a better life,” said Comrade Moyo. “This fund is a step forward, and we are thankful.”
With the Midlands launch complete, the government is expected to continue rolling out the fund in other provinces, ensuring that all veterans receive the support they deserve.
