Calvin Moyo, born at Phelandaba Clinic in Bulawayo and now an engineering technician based in Doncaster, celebrated a victorious debut in professional boxing, winning his first super welterweight fight.
Moyo, who moved to England with his family when he was just a year old, took up boxing four years ago and turned professional at the age of 23. In his first fight, he defeated Sheffield’s Paul Scaife on points over four rounds at the GBM Steel City show organized by South Yorkshire promoter Izzy Asif.
Reflecting on his victory, Moyo expressed his excitement: “The fight went well. I enjoyed everything about it, from the media coverage to having my hand raised for my first professional win. It’s unforgettable. My dream has come true, and I’m now a professional boxer. I can’t wait to get back in the gym to improve further and deliver an even better performance next time.”
A former McAuley Catholic High School student, Moyo began boxing at Wilby Carr Community Boxing Club in Cantley. After the COVID-19 pandemic, he started training with Dave Allen—now his manager—at Allen’s home gym, known as “The Patio of Dreams.”
Moyo recounted his journey: “I met Dave at the gym, asked for advice, and we built a strong relationship. He started coaching me, and within two years, I’d won 11 out of 15 amateur bouts, including victories over regional champions. Turning professional gives me a new challenge to push myself further.”
He looks up to Russian boxer Dmitry Bivol, whom he describes as “a class act” and admires both for his skill and sportsmanship, especially after his recent fight against Artur Beterbiev. Moyo explained his love for boxing: “I value the discipline it instills and the thrill of testing my physical and mental limits. It makes me feel alive, and I thrive on it. I hope my hard work and openness inspire people to support me, just like my family does.”
Family is a cornerstone of Moyo’s life. He credits his mother, Sihle Dube, as his greatest inspiration: “My mother is my hero for all she’s done for us despite the odds. I want to make her proud. She doesn’t enjoy watching me box but understands it’s what makes me happiest.”
Dube expressed her pride in her son, acknowledging his discipline and hard work. “I’m proud of my boy. He’s focused and determined. I always thought he was stronger in football, but his performance in boxing has surprised me. I wish him all the best,” she said.
Moyo grew up in a close-knit family with a younger brother and an older sister. Though boxing is his passion, he also enjoys socializing, dining out, and playing football—a sport he played regularly for Bessacarr FC in his youth.
Interestingly, Moyo was born just 600 meters from Iminyela Hall, a place renowned for producing notable boxers like Nokuthula Tshabangu, Ndumiso Mabhena, Eddie Ndlovu, and others. Now, Moyo is carving out his own legacy in the sport, aiming to honor his roots and inspire others along the way.
