Fraudulent Fuel Scheme Leads to Arrest of Cogta Office Manager in Eastern Cape

Police are actively searching for two individuals who managed to escape custody at Chitungwiza Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, January 23, 2025. Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, a spokesperson for the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) in Harare Province, confirmed the incident and called on the public for assistance in locating the suspects.

The suspects are identified as Mawire Tendai, 30, from Dengu Street, Zengeza 1, and Alex Mubayi from Mbira Street, Zengeza. Both were in court after being detained on separate theft charges.

Mawire was arrested on December 21, 2024, for allegedly stealing a Samsung smartphone worth US$60, under case number CR 479/01/25. Mubayi was detained for stealing various items, including a pushing tray, blankets, and a bed worth US$145, under case number CR 493/01/25.

According to Chakanza, on the morning of their escape, the two were taken to court by investigating officer Cst Bhero. The pair, handcuffed together with one set of cuffs, were told to sit on a bench while the officer spoke with prosecutors. Seizing the opportunity, the suspects managed to walk out of the courtroom without being noticed.
