Police Officers Nab Fugitive After Week-Long Manhunt

Two police officers, Constable Jumuseni and Sergeant Makina, successfully apprehended a fugitive by hiding in a storm drain for hours. The suspect, 30-year-old Tendai Mawire, had managed to escape from the Chitungwiza Magistrates’ Court while still handcuffed and evaded capture for a week.

According to reports, Mawire was one of two individuals who fled from custody on January 23 while awaiting trial for theft-related charges. Despite being handcuffed together, Mawire and his accomplice, Alex Mubayi, seized an opportunity to escape when the officer left them unattended while processing paperwork. The duo disappeared unnoticed from the courthouse.

On January 29, police received a tip-off about Mawire’s whereabouts and tracked him to Zengeza 1, Chitungwiza. The officers then set up an ambush, lying in wait near his suspected hideout. Around 5:00 pm, Mawire was spotted entering a yard, and the officers emerged from the storm drain to make the arrest. When confronted, Mawire attempted to resist, even threatening the officers with a pair of scissors, but was eventually subdued without any injuries.

Inspector Luckmore Chakanza of the Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed the arrest, noting that Mawire had successfully eluded the authorities for several days.
