Stepsons Claim Father’s Assets, Leaving Biological Sons in the Dust

In Honde Valley, the Chikazaza family is in a deep conflict over land following their father’s death in 2020. Instead of bringing them together, his passing has created divisions within the family.

The main issue is the inheritance of their father’s land, which has led to a disagreement between Tonderai Chikazaza and his stepbrothers, the Gadzani brothers. Seeking justice, Tonderai recently took his complaint to Chief Mutasa’s community court, accusing the Gadzani brothers of taking control of their father’s property unfairly.

“After my father died, everything fell apart. My stepbrothers took over the land, leaving my siblings and me with nothing,” he said. The Gadzani brothers not only got the land but also the resources that Tonderai and his brothers needed to survive.

During the court hearing, Tonderai expressed his pain to the chief and the community. He explained how the Gadzani brothers’ actions had forced him and his siblings into poverty. Without land to farm, they had to rent from neighbors, struggling to provide for their families.

This issue was more than just a legal matter; it was about their survival and dignity.

Tonderai believes that, as the biological children of their father, he and his siblings should inherit the land, not their stepbrothers. He argued that inheritance laws favor blood relatives and insisted that their father would have wanted his biological children to have the land. “We share his blood. We should inherit what was rightfully his,” he stated.

On the other hand, the Gadzani brothers claimed that their father had intended for them to manage the land, arguing that family dynamics were more complicated than Tonderai suggested.

Despite their arguments, the conflict remains unresolved, leaving Tonderai and his siblings to struggle with their situation.
