The glitz, glam and fast life of one of South Africa’s most notorious tender tycoons has come crashing down. The Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) has swooped in on Hangwani Morgan Maumela, seizing jaw-dropping assets worth a staggering R325 million.
From luxury mansions and Lamborghinis to a flashy party boat, nothing was spared in the AFU’s crackdown.
Maumela, who is linked to President Cyril Ramaphosa through a previous marriage, allegedly raked in millions through shady tenders at Tembisa Hospital — irregularities first exposed by the late whistleblower Babita Deokaran, just weeks before she was gunned down in August 2021.
Despite their family connection, Ramaphosa has long distanced himself from Maumela, famously saying: “I don’t even know this gentleman.”
Fleet of Supercars Wiped Out
The Gauteng High Court gave the green light for the AFU to swoop in, and the treasure trove they uncovered reads like a billionaire’s wish list.
Among the jaw-droppers:
-
Bentley Continental GT V8 – R4.1 million
-
Four Lamborghinis, including:
-
Aventador SVJ
-
Aventador Ultimate Coupe (together worth R17.9 million)
-
Huracan STO (R8.7 million)
-
Urus (R6.9 million)
-
-
Regency 250 LE3 party boat – R1.9 million
Mansions Across SA
It wasn’t just the cars that raised eyebrows. Maumela’s empire of luxury properties was also stripped away.
-
Bantry Bay, Cape Town mansion – R88.5 million
-
Sandton twin properties – R69.7 million & R71.6 million
-
Prime spots in Three Anchor Bay, Pecanwood Estate, Hartbeespoort Dam & Zimbali Coastal Estate (Ballito)
One of these estates, in Ballito, was allegedly the scene of a secret meeting between ex-Police Minister Bheki Cele and tenderpreneur-turned-attempted-murder-accused Cat Matlala, a close ally of Maumela.
The Tembisa Tender Web
Investigations unearthed that 14 front companies linked to Maumela and his family cashed in at least R415 million from questionable Tembisa Hospital contracts.
Some of the companies reportedly:
-
Never delivered goods despite pocketing payments.
-
Forged and tampered with critical procurement documents.
-
Exploited supply chain loopholes to milk taxpayers dry.
The scandal has reignited outrage over how whistleblower Babita Deokaran’s warnings were ignored until after her death. Now, with the AFU circling, the once untouchable tender kingpin finds his empire of excess crumbling.
From popping champagne in Lambos to watching it all slip away — Maumela’s downfall is one for the books.
