Trump’s Criticism of Harris’ Racial Background Provokes Strong Reactions from Journalists and Voters

Trump’s Criticism of Harris’ Racial Background Provokes Strong Reactions from Journalists and Voters

During a prominent annual gathering of Black journalists, U.S. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump inaccurately claimed that his Democratic opponent, Kamala Harris, had previously minimized her Black heritage.

Trump suggested that Harris had always emphasized her Indian heritage and only recently started identifying as Black. His remarks, which included questioning her racial identity, elicited mixed reactions from the audience of about 1,000.

Harris, who is of both Indian and Jamaican descent, has consistently identified as both Black and Asian. She is the first person of both Black and Asian heritage to serve as Vice President.

In response to Trump’s comments, Harris addressed members of the Sigma Gamma Rho sorority in Houston, calling Trump’s remarks a “reminder” of the divisiveness and disrespect during the previous administration. She criticized the former president for perpetuating a negative narrative and emphasized the need for better leadership.

Since announcing her presidential campaign earlier this month, Harris has encountered a series of racist and sexist attacks online, with some far-right figures questioning her racial identity. Republican leaders have urged a focus on policy rather than personal attacks.

Trump has dismissed advice to temper his rhetoric, stating his intention to remain outspoken. During the National Association of Black Journalists’ convention in Chicago, Trump faced criticism for his comments and responses to questions, including a controversial statement about “Black jobs,” which drew disapproval from some Black leaders.

Trump also avoided commenting on whether Harris was a “DEI hire,” a term used to suggest someone was selected based on race or gender rather than qualifications. When questioned about his stance on police immunity following a fatal incident involving a Black woman in Illinois, Trump admitted to limited knowledge of the case, further drawing criticism.

The interview was delayed due to technical issues and ended prematurely, with Trump’s campaign citing time constraints. At a subsequent rally in Pennsylvania, Trump did not address his earlier remarks about Harris but focused on criticizing her stance on immigration and fracking.

Strategist Whit Ayres criticized Trump’s focus on Harris’ racial background, suggesting it was an unwise strategy. The invitation for Trump to speak at the NABJ event had sparked controversy, leading to some members stepping down in protest.

Trump’s appearance aimed to sway Black voters, though polls show a tight race with Harris, who recently gained increased support among voters of color and younger demographics.

A national poll indicated Harris leading Trump narrowly, reflecting a competitive presidential race.
