In the latest development, Rimbi Travel and Tour bus that was travelling from Zimbabwe to Malawi was involved in an accident on Tuesday.
Information Ministry Permanent Secretary Nick Mangwana confirmed the accident on his Twitter account. He said that a Rimbi Travel and Tours bus was involved in an accident with a motorcycle and a Toyota Fortuner near Mutoko Centre. The accident claimed the life if the motorcyclist who was run over while his passenger was seriously injured.
The latest bus accident comes weeks after the government reinstated Rimbi Travel and Tours’ operating license.
The government suspended Rimbi Travel and Tours’ operating license after one of the bus operator’s buses was involved in a fatal accident with a Zebra Kiss bus along the Harare-Nyamapanda route.
In video clips that went viral, the two buses were racing against each other before the accident that claimed the life of one conductor and left several passengers injured.
After the suspension of its operating license, Rimbi Travel and Tours initially sued the government but later backtracked on the decision.
Announcing the lifting of the suspension, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development said it had been satisfied by Rimbi Travel and Tours’ submission of comprehensive measures to prevent similar accidents in the future.
The Ministry also revealed that while Rimbi Travel and Tours had been allowed to operate once more it was banned from servicing the Harare to Nyamapanda route.
The statement by the Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development Felix Mhona on the lifting of Rimbi Travel and Tours’ suspension reads:
The lifting of the suspension follows the submission of comprehensive measures that have been put in place by the operator to avert such incidents in future. Prior to the road traffic accident that occurred on 17 January 2023, efforts were made by stakeholders in the passenger transport sector to resolve the route conflict between Rimbi Travel and Tours Pvt Ltd and Tashllyt Investments Pvt Ltd trading as Zebra Kiss.
The Ministry has therefore seen it in the best interest of all concerned stakeholders to cancel all route permits for Rimbi Travel and Tours Pvt on the Harare to Nyamapanda route.
The Operator has consented to this arrangement and will be allowed to service other routes across the country.
At the time of writing, the Zimbabwe Republic Police had not released a statement on the latest accident involving a Rimbi Travel and Tours bus.
