The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) disclosed that objections were raised regarding the election of Chief Fortune Charumbira as the deputy president of the National Council of Chiefs.
Charumbira, who previously served two terms as president of the chief’s council, assumed the position of deputy president following elections held on August 10, 2023.
Chief Khumalo Matshane, formerly the deputy president of the chiefs’ council, was elected as the president during the same elections.
However, Zec’s report on the 2023 harmonized elections, presented in Parliament recently, highlighted reservations from certain “quotas” regarding Charumbira’s election to the position, citing his previous tenure as president of the same council.

According to Zec, while there is no explicit law prohibiting such appointments, some quotas expressed concerns about electing someone as deputy president of the council of chiefs after serving two terms as president.
Zec suggested a review of the laws governing the constitution of the council of chiefs to address these concerns.
“The election of the President and the deputy president of the Council of Chiefs saw the former Deputy president of the council being elevated to the post of President while the former president being elected as the deputy president,” Zec stated.
“While there is no explicit law prohibiting this, there seems to be some quotas who have expressed reservations on having one elected as a deputy president of the council of Chiefs after serving at its helm for two terms, as president.”
