ZiG inflation declines further as price stability strengthens

Zimbabwe’s annual inflation rate measured in the ZiG currency continued its downward trajectory in December, easing by four percentage points to 15 percent and reinforcing confidence in sustained price stability.

Data released by the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZimStat), based on the all-items ZiG Consumer Price Index (CPI), shows that average prices rose by 15 percent between December 2024 and December 2025.

ZimStat said this represents the lowest year-on-year inflation rate recorded since the introduction of the ZiG currency in April last year, highlighting steady progress in curbing domestic price pressures.

The improved inflation outlook has been underpinned by more coordinated monetary and fiscal policy measures, which have helped stabilise markets and restore confidence.

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe had targeted an annual ZiG inflation rate of below 20 percent by December 2025, relying on tight monetary conditions and increased foreign currency inflows to counter early inflation spikes that were driven by base effects.

On a monthly basis, inflation remained contained at 0.2 percent in December, the same rate recorded in November.

“Prices as measured by the all-items ZiG CPI increased by an average of 0.2 percent from November 2025 to December 2025,” ZimStat reported.

Inflation for food and non-alcoholic beverages edged down to 0.6 percent, while non-food items recorded zero inflation, pointing to subdued price movements across most categories.

Economists note that the year-on-year trend provides a clearer indication of economic stability, particularly after the sharp inflation surges seen earlier in 2025.

Annual ZiG inflation had surged to 85.7 percent in April, peaked at 95.8 percent in July, before falling sharply to 32.7 percent by October, setting the stage for the continued deceleration seen at year-end.
