Who Can Apply?
Prospective full-time PhD students who:
- Hold or are likely to attain a first-class honours degree (or equivalent).
- Have a formal offer to study a PhD at the University of Liverpool.
- Are prepared to attend events organised by the Duncan Norman Charitable Trust in Liverpool.
- Have applied for alternate postgraduate funding, with this scholarship acting as a top-up if secured.
Ineligible candidates include:
- MRes students.
- Students at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine or based at XJTLU.
- Currently registered University of Liverpool MPhil/PhD or off-site students.
How Are Applicants Selected?
Applications are reviewed by the University’s Scholarship Awarding Committee, which evaluates academic excellence, efforts to secure alternate funding, and eligibility criteria compliance.

- Annual Stipend: £22,000 (or top-up to this level if other funding is secured).
- Tuition Fees: Full coverage for Home, EU, or Overseas students.
- Accommodation Support: Free on-campus accommodation worth up to £4,635/year, or an equivalent off-campus allowance.
- Tech Allowance: A laptop or desktop computer valued up to £1,000.
- Conference Funding: Up to £500 in years 2 and 3.
How Long Will the Award Last?
The scholarship covers the entire duration of the PhD programme.
