Zimbabwe will commemorate Heroes Day on August 10, 2026, with citizens gathering to honour the country’s liberation struggle heroes and heroines who sacrificed their lives for independence.
Heroes Day is observed annually on the second Monday of August and is one of Zimbabwe’s most significant national holidays. The day is dedicated to remembering those who fought during the liberation struggle against colonial rule and those who made the ultimate sacrifice in pursuit of self-determination.
The main commemorations are traditionally held at the National Heroes Acre in Harare, where national leaders, families of fallen heroes, war veterans and members of the public gather to pay tribute to the country’s liberation icons. Similar events are also held at provincial and district levels across the country.
The day provides an opportunity for Zimbabweans to reflect on the values of courage, unity and patriotism demonstrated by the country’s freedom fighters during the struggle for independence, which culminated in the attainment of independence on April 18, 1980.
Speaking ahead of previous commemorations, the government has emphasised the importance of preserving the history of the liberation struggle and passing it on to younger generations.
Heroes Day is also marked by cultural activities, speeches, exhibitions and educational programmes aimed at promoting awareness of Zimbabwe’s history and honouring those who contributed to the country’s liberation.
As the nation prepares for this year’s commemorations, Zimbabweans are expected to remember the sacrifices of the men and women who fought for freedom while reflecting on the responsibility of protecting the country’s sovereignty and advancing national development.
The 2026 Heroes Day commemorations will be held under the theme of honouring the past while inspiring future generations to contribute towards building a prosperous Zimbabwe.
