The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) has officially launched four training programmes during a joint opening and reception ceremony held at Chikurubi Damview.
The courses are being conducted by the ZPCS Staff College and the Equitation Training Wing.
The programmes include the Management and Leadership Development Course in Corrections (MLDCC) Number 10, the Basic Trainee Riders’ Course, the Farriery Course and the Junior Instruction Course.
Speaking on behalf of ZPCS Commissioner-General Dr Moses Cyril Ngawaite Chihobvu, Commissioner Christmas Tarwira said investing in the continuous development of a professional, disciplined and capable workforce remains essential to the Service’s future.
He noted that the organisation’s objectives are aligned with the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2), adding that the success of the institution is determined by the quality of its personnel.
“It is through a well-trained, disciplined, and visionary workforce that the Service will continue to enhance its effectiveness in offender rehabilitation, public safety, and national development,” he said.
The Management and Leadership Development Course in Corrections Number 10 has enrolled 56 participants, among them five officers from the Rwanda Correctional Service. The inclusion of international participants is expected to promote the exchange of knowledge, experiences and best practices in correctional management.
Commissioner Tarwira said the training initiatives demonstrate the Service’s dedication to enhancing correctional systems both within the region and beyond through academic and equitation-based programmes.
A total of 26 officers are taking part in the Equitation Unit training programmes.
“The main thrust of these courses is to nurture and train officers who are competent, innovative, and results-oriented, and equipped to navigate the evolving demands of modern corrections,” he said.
He encouraged participants to fully engage with the training, stressing that the continued transformation of Zimbabwe’s correctional system depends on officers who are committed to learning, innovation and professional excellence.
The four programmes are scheduled to run until later this year as ZPCS continues to strengthen its security and rehabilitation mandate through ongoing professional development.
