Unidentified drones were observed flying over three U.S. Air Force bases in the UK—Lakenheath, Mildenhall, and Feltwell—between Wednesday and Saturday, as reported by CNN. These bases, located in eastern England, are used for various strategic operations by the United States Air Force (USAF).
The U.S. Air Forces in Europe confirmed that the drone incursions did not affect base residents or critical infrastructure. Reports indicated that five to six drones were involved, and their movements seemed to be coordinated.
U.S. defense officials are currently investigating the origin of the drones but have dismissed the possibility of hobbyist drones being involved. There is no evidence suggesting that the drones posed a threat or attempted to gather sensitive intelligence.
In response to the incident, the UK Ministry of Defence emphasized its commitment to counter-drone security measures at defense sites. Mildenhall hosts the only permanent U.S. air refueling wing in Europe, while Lakenheath is home to the USAF’s 48th Fighter Wing, which has been instrumental in post-9/11 operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Both the U.S. and UK governments have declined to provide further comments on the matter.
