FC Platinum’s ambitions of securing the 2024 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League title were dashed after a 2-0 defeat to Dynamos at Rufaro Stadium on Sunday.
Simba Bhora, the league leaders, extended their lead to nine points on Saturday, thanks to a 2-1 win over CAPS United at Wadzanai Stadium.
Following these MatchDay 31 results, Simba Bhora now have 63 points, with FC Platinum trailing at 54 points in second place. This leaves Simba Bhora needing just one point from their remaining three matches to clinch the 2024 PSL title.
The match at Rufaro Stadium was effectively decided by two quick goals in the first half, with Emmanuel Ziocha and Valentine Kadonzvo scoring for Dynamos, dealing a heavy blow to Norman Mapeza’s FC Platinum team.
Dynamos coach Lloyd Chigowe commented after the game, explaining that his team anticipated FC Platinum’s aggressive push for goals to stay in the title race. He noted:
“We expected FC Platinum to come at us with intensity. We allowed them to push forward, then countered effectively, which was key. We managed to absorb their pressure, which made the difference.”

He further expressed confidence in his team’s potential, pointing to their tactical discipline and resilience, and suggested that, with better support, the team could excel against any opponent in the country.
FC Platinum’s coach Norman Mapeza acknowledged his team’s shortcomings, especially in creating clear chances and avoiding defensive errors. He stated:
“We started well but conceded two soft goals due to defensive lapses, especially on set pieces. In the second half, we tried to push forward but couldn’t create enough opportunities.”
Reflecting on the season, Mapeza expressed pride in his team, emphasizing the progress his players have made, particularly those recently promoted from Division One, and highlighted the need to stay focused on the final three games.
Meanwhile, defending champions Ngezi Platinum Stars are third in the standings with 47 points, tied with Highlanders FC and Manica Diamonds FC, with Ngezi Platinum having a game in hand over their rivals.
